To the President of the United States Donald J. Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio:
We the undersigned are gravely concerned about the systematic persecution of Christians in Nigeria. In recent years, more Christians have been martyred in Nigeria than in any other country in the world. Having spoken on the ground with church leaders and Christian survivors across denominations, Solidarity with the Persecuted Church (SPC) can confirm that the government of Nigeria is at best indifferent to this persecution and at worst complicit in it.
We commend the Administration’s unwavering support of religious freedom. In that spirit, we ask that the U.S. government exercise its power to influence the government of Nigeria to restore the rule of law in that country. We encourage the U.S. government to insist that Christians in Nigeria are protected by their government and that Islamic terrorists who perpetrate violence against Christians are brought to justice. We call upon you to use all means at your disposal – diplomatic entreaty, economic sanctions, moral suasion, and international legal action – to compel the government of Nigeria to embrace its obligation to protect all of its citizens, including Christians.
Respectfully and with gratitude,
