Nigeria: Two Years After the Chibok Girl Abductions

On April 14, 2014 – two years ago today – terrorists of the Boko Haram movement of Islamic extremism swept into the Nigerian town of Chibok and kidnapped 279 girls from their school. To date 60 have escaped, leaving 219 still in captivity, whereabouts unknown.

Nigeria’s new president, Muhammadu Buhari, vowed to end Boko Haram’s reign of terror by year’s end, 2015. ChibokHe fell short of that ambitious goal, but Boko Haram’s operational range has been reduced, and major population centers in northeastern Nigeria are now reportedly safe from attacks.

Including the city of Maiduguri, which is both the birthplace of Boko Haram and the seat of Bishop Oliver Doeme, of the Catholic Diocese of Maiduguri.

We rejoice that Bishop Oliver and many of his people are today less vulnerable to attacks by Boko Haram, and we pray the Bishop can soon begin rebuilding his many churches desecrated by Boko Haram. But we also remember the school girls of Chibok; please join us in praying for their liberation and safe return to their families.

Here’s a good article from today’s Washington Post on the situation in Nigeria.
