The president of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, has announced the final victory over the Islamic terrorist organization, Boko Haram. He asserts Boko Haram has been “crushed.”
This announcement comes one year after the target date for ending Boko Haram’s reign of terror. But if true, this means the Nigerian Church can begin rebuilding in earnest, particularly in the diocese of Maiduguri, led by Bishop Oliver Doeme.
Unfortunately, in announcing that the Nigerian army had overrun and destroyed Boko Haram’s base camp in the jungle, none of the remaining kidnapped Chibok girls said to have been freed. Nearly 200 of them remain in captivity.
We pray for their safety especially, and for Bishop Doeme, whose wisdom will be needed as the Church emerges from this terrible episode of anti-Christian persecution.
